Mamelodi Sundowns to derail Kaizer Chiefs’ transfer chase?

Kaizer Chiefs are thought to be on the hunt to reinforce their midfield, during the next transfer window.

Chiefs are currently eighth on the DStv Premiership log, with interim coach Cavin Johnson refusing to make January signings.

Johnson had often alluded to the media that, he believes in the current crop of players he inherited at Chiefs. He also stressed he just needs more time to coach them, rather than go into the market. With that being said, it has not quite worked out for him, as the squad suffered a few key injuries. Whether because of those injuries or not, they have since regressed incredibly in 2024.

At the start of the year, Chiefs were in sixth place, but not far away from second place points wise. Now a run that had seen them win just one game in 2024, saw them slump out of the race for second spot. Amakhosi will now be under a new coach and probably a new technical team altogether next season. The fresh group are expected to be armed with the tools to dip into the market, reinforcing their playing squad.

Chiefs interested in Mkhize

One of the players that was linked with a move to Chiefs in the January transfer window is Siphesihle Mkhize. According to Soccer-Laduma, the transfer negotiations could be complicated by Mamelodi Sundowns. This is because they still own the player with Sekhukhune United just having an option to buy.

Sundowns and Sekhukhune negotiations add complications

“If all goes well there could be player exchange between Sekhukhune and Chiefs. But it is like a three-team transfer talk because Sekhukhune have to get the player from Sundowns first or Chiefs can get him straight from Sundowns because he is on loan to Sekhukhune United from Sundowns. Chiefs are working around the clock to have him as things stand now,” said the source.

It seems as if Chiefs’ best bet is to wait for Sekhukhune to trigger Mkhize’s option to buy. This is because it could be tougher for them to negotiate to sign a player from a direct rival.
