Will Orlando Pirates sign Thalente Mbatha?

Orlando Pirates pulled off the surprise signing of SuperSport United midfielder Thalente Mbatha in January.

Pirates signed two players in the January transfer window, Thabiso Lebitso and Mbatha, who is on loan.

Mbatha had been around the reserve football circles for quite some time, having featured for Highlands Park. After the club sold its status, the player sought a move to stay in the top-flight ranks and joined SuperSport. There, he eventually made it to the first-team squad under coach Gavin Hunt. Even so, he failed to be a regular in the side, even struggling to make the match day squad. Therefore, it came as a shock to many when Pirates announced the signing of the 22-year-old.

This publication reported last month that SuperSport and Pirates had agreed to a loan deal with an option to buy. Now with just a couple of games into his Buccaneers career, it is thought a decision has already been made. According to Mbatha’s agent Mike Makaab the player is most likely to stay at his current club.

“Yes, he (Mbatha) is there on loan with option to buy. He is playing and at this moment we’re quite confident that the option will be exercised but obviously that is up to Orlando Pirates.” Said  Makaab to iDiski Times.

Last month, this publication reported that Pirates management had already decided to sign Mbatha on a permanent deal. It would be very interesting to see what the club does with its midfield situation next season. The club already have Miguel Timm, Thabang Monare, Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo as regulars. Furthermore, the likes of Makhehlene Makhaula has also emerged as a regular. Sipho Baloni, Fortune Makaringe and Sandile Mthethwa on the other hand, have struggled to get a look in.

Pirates will also have to make a decision on Bafana Bafana international Goodman Mosele’s future ahead of next season. One thing is for sure, Mbatha is looking increasingly likely to be part of their midfield rebuild.
