Broos succumbs to pressure, calls top-rated PSL striker to Bafana

Bafana Bafana Hugo Broos coach has called up Premier Soccer League (PSL) top striker Khanyiso Mayo to the national team.

The Cape Town City star was omitted from the initial 32-man preliminary squad last week.

Many fans were infuriated when Mayo was left out of Broos’ Bafana Bafana’s Afcon squad.

They believe that the 25-year-old player is one of the best players in the PSL.

He is the second-top goal scorer and the best South African finisher in the DStv Premiership this season, behind only Mamelodi Sundowns’ Lucas Ribeiro.

On Monday, Hugo Broos included Mayo when he announced his 23-man Bafana squad to play Andorra and Algeria.

The Belgian coach has preferred the Orlando Pirates striking duo of Zakhele Lepasa and Evidence Makgopa in the past six to eight months.

While Lepasa has flopped, Makgopa flourished especially in the Afcon. The latter is injured and Mayo has been called as his replacement by Broos.

Here is Broos’ final Bafana 23-man squad:

Goalkeepers: Ronwen Williams (Mamelodi Sundowns), Bruce Bvuma (Kaizer Chiefs), Ricardo Goss (SuperSport United)

Defenders: Thapelo Morena, Aubrey Modiba, Grant Kekana (all Sundowns), Sydney Mobbie (Sekhukhune United), Nkosinathi Sibisi, Tapelo Xoki (both Orlando Pirates), Siyabonga Ngezana (FCSB, Romania)

Midfielders: Teboho Mokoena (Sundowns), Goodman Mosele (Chippa United), Sphephelo Sithole (CD Tondela, Portugal), Grant Margeman (SuperSport)

Forwards: Themba Zwane (Sundowns), Patrick Maswanganyi (Pirates), Khanyiso Mayo (Cape Town City), Oswin Appollis (Polokwane City), Mihlali Mayambela (Aris Limassol, Cyprus), Mlondi Mbanjwa (AmaZulu), Iqraam Rayners (Stellenbosch), Elias Mokwana (Sekhukhune United)

Khanyisa Mayo returns to Bafana Bafana

With Broos ‘forced’ to select Mayo, will the CPT City striker repay Bafana fans?

The striker has already bagged in nine goals this season in the DStv Premiership for his side Cape Town City.
