Manchester United tried signing Cesc Fàbregas ahead of Arsenal, held talks with his parents – Man United News And Transfer News

Manchester United’s academy transformation during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reign saw them pick some of the best young talents in Spanish football.

Alejandro Garnacho (Atletico Madrid), Álvaro Carreras (Real Madrid), and Marc Jurado (Barcelona) all moved to Manchester from Spain to join United’s academy. Not every signing has worked as intended, but the summer raid of 2020 is still seen as a success.

In less than four years, Garnacho has established himself as a key member of Erik ten Hag’s squad, having scored seven goals and mustered three assists in the Premier League this season.

Between 2003 and 2004, when Sir Alex Ferguson was at the helm, the Red Devils attempted to do something similar, approaching multiple La Masia talents in the same period to convince them to move to England.

That move saw United land Gerard Piqué, who spent four years on the club’s books, before returning to Barcelona in 2008 after winning the Champions League.

Interestingly, the Sir Alex-led side also made a move for Cesc Fàbregas, who eventually joined Arsène Wenger at Arsenal.

Speaking on the Planet Premier League Podcast, Fabregas shed light on United’s interest.

The World Cup-winning midfielder revealed: “I think there were some conversations with my parents, but Arsenal were the ones who went full-on. I think Pique after went to United, but they were more interested in him than me.”

He added: “At this stage I think they were talking to three or four players at the academy at Barcelona, but it was always Arsenal for me.”

Nearly a decade later, Fabregas was once again linked to United, as David Moyes looked to strengthen his midfield in 2013. The Spaniard, then back at Barcelona, was struggling to play ahead of the likes of Andres Iniesta and Xavi.

In 2020, Fabregas revealed (via Express) that he had discussions with Moyes. The Scottish manager was convinced United “were taking him”.

However, things did not materialise beyond that and the midfielder eventually moved to Chelsea a year later.
