Young 19-year-old Chiefs striker Wandile Duba wasted no time in announcing himself on the senior stage as he scored a stunning goal in a 1-0 win over Golden Arrows in the DStv Premiership at FNB Stadium.
It was a much-needed win for Chiefs, and certainly a goal to remember, and it would have been interesting to see whether the teenager would be included in the action for this weekend’s Soweto derby against Pirates.
Injury concern over rising Chiefs starlet Wandile Duba
Although Duba scored an unforgettable goal, he unfortunately picked up an injury that forced a premature substitution.
“I am happy for young Dube, he scored a beautiful goal in the first half,” coach Cavin Johnson told SuperSport TV.
“We had to take him off the pitch because his ankle got hurt. We gave the youngster his moment, he was good, and he gets hurt and we had to take him off, and I feel sorry for him.”
Nothing to worry about
However, Duba downplayed any concerns, assuring fans that he would be back for the tie against Orlando Pirates.
“It’s not something to worry about. I’ll be okay for the derby,” he told SuperSport TV. He went on to declare his intentions for the much-anticipated clash. “They [Orlando Pirates] should expect me because I’m coming.”
Meanwhile, Johnson cautioned against putting too many expectations on the youngster too soon, but suggested the sky was the limit when it came to his future.
“To judge him on one game would be premature. But to judge him on training sessions and the mentality and attitude he’s had at training, then he probably has a long way to go with Kaizer Chiefs,” Johnson told journalists.
“He just has to keep on working hard and accept that he won’t always start. If he stays humble, he will be a good striker.”
