Kaizer Chiefs to turn to youngster to solve midfield crisis this weekend?

The DStv Premiership is set to return to action this weekend, with Kaizer Chiefs in action.

Chiefs will travel to the Athlone Stadium to play Cape Town City as local football returns from the international break.

This will be the first time Chiefs play in a competitive match, since their 3-2 Soweto derby loss. Because they had been knocked out of the Nedbank Cup by MFC side Milford, they went on a long break. By the time Amakhosi take to the field against City, it would’ve been 21 days since their loss against Orlando Pirates

Chiefs have played at least one friendly match, in that time, against Nedbank Cup quarterfinalists AmaTuks last week. But soon it will be time to see, exactly what they have been working on in those three weeks without action. But in doing so this weekend, they will be crippled. That is because they will have to face City without regular midfield duo Edson Castillo and captain Yusuf Maart.

That is because the Chiefs duo have been suspended duo to the accumulation of yellow cards received. Maart and Castillo had become the core and spine of Amakhosi line ups under Cavin Johnson. The interim coach found consistency in his selection of a midfield three that contains them and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo

Zwane to return for Chiefs against Cape Town City?

Now in the absence of Castillo and Maart, Chiefs will have to come up with two replacements in midfield. One of those, is expected to be Bafana Bafana international Sibongiseni Mthethwa. Mthethwa’s recent injury saw him fall down the pecking order upon return. This could be a blessing in disguise and perfect opportunity for him to show his worth again. Next to him should be another player with a point to prove, in Samkelo Zwane.

Zwane has hardly got a look in for Chiefs this season, with the club’s faithful calling for his inclusion. With Mthethwa set to occupy the number six role, it is expected that Zwane will be entrusted with the number eight role. Ahead of them could be former City player Mduduzi Mdantsane who made a surprise return in the derby.

Kick off for the game between City and Chiefs is set for 15h30 on Saturday.
