Forgotten midfielder set for second chance at Kaizer Chiefs?

Kaizer Chiefs played to a 0-0 draw with their hosts Cape Town City in the DStv Premiership on Saturday.

In a game that failed to produce any fireworks neither Chiefs nor City looked promising on the day.

With Chiefs having both of their regular central midfielders Yusuf Maart and Edson Castillo Suspended changes were expected. It was thought that Sibongiseni Mthethwa was going to be the most obvious inclusion. The former Stellenbosch FC midfielder was, indeed in the starting line up. The player who was expected to join him in the line up was Samkelo Zwane. Although experienced campaigner Siyethemba Sithebe was also available, Zwane has featured more times than him on coach Cavin Johnson’s bench.

In the end, it turned out that it would be Sithebe who started the game instead. To make matters worse for Zwane, he did not even make it off the bench in the encounter. Now speaking to the media after the game, Chiefs coach Johnson explained the selection.

Johnson encouraged by Sithebe’s display against City

“I don’t know why he (Sithebe) has played one game. I think since Sunday, he’s been working to play. Today he got his chance; I have to give him 10-out-of-10; he did well today. I hope he stays like this for the next 10 games. I always said this, ‘I will try to give everybody an opportunity while I’m here’. And if they play and do well, it shows you why the club (Chiefs) bought them initially.” Said Johnson according to FARPost.

Prior to the game against City, Sithebe had only featured once before during the current campaign for Chiefs. His only previous appearance was his surprise selection against Mamelodi Sundowns in the second game of the season. He had a torrid time in that 2-1 loss and never featured again for ex-coach Molefi Ntseki

The selection of Sithebe is even more surprising, with multiple reports claiming he is on his way out of Chiefs. His contract expires at the end of the season, and it is thought that it won’t be renewed. The former AmaZulu star has been linked to both his former club as well as Golden Arrows in recent times.

Could he earn a Chiefs stay?

It was also reported by this publication that there was no way back for Sithebe at Chiefs. Sources claimed the club looked at his age and the younger and better midfielders they had already started investing in. But with an encouraging display and kind words from Johnson, a solid run could see him convince Amakhosi to keep him.
