Mbatha had been around the reserve football circles for quite some time, having featured for Highlands Park. After the club sold its status, the player sought a move to stay in the top flight ranks and joined SuperSport. There, he eventually made it to the first team squad under coach Gavin Hunt. Even so, he failed to be a regular in the side, even struggling to make the match day squad. Therefore, it came as a shock to many when Pirates announced the signing of the 22-year-old.

Mbatha on loan to Pirates with option to buy

“We have agreed a structure with Pirates should they wish to make the move permanent. We will review that at the end of the season. He (Mbatha) remains our player and an asset and that means we can elect to recall him from loan at the end of the season or to entertain a Pirates offer, or consider other options we have from other interested clubs. Our first commitment is to Orlando Pirates and once we have exhausted those negotiations we will make a final decision.” Said Matthews.
