Orlando Pirates waving goodbye to five Golden Oldies?

Orlando Pirates have a raft of players on the wrong side of 30 who are likely to leave the club.

Pirates Golden Oldies on the way out

Kermit Erasmus

Where should we start with Romeo? Erasmus joined the Buccaneers from Sundowns in September 2022 after feverish speculation linking him with a switch to Kaizer Chiefs. The seasoned striker has spent stints in France, Portugal and the Netherlands before settling back into South African football in 2019. It’s anyone’s bet where he could end up in 2024-25, but it’s unlikely he’ll still be a Buccaneer after a second stint with the Soweto Giants.

World Soccer Magazine named Erasmus one of the 50 most talented young players in world football in a piece titled “The 50 most exciting teenagers on the planet” in 2007. That list included Karim Benzema, Sergio Aguero, Angel di Maria, Gareth Bale and Alexandre Pato. Kermit has represented 11 clubs across five countries throughout his career.

Richard Ofori

Sipho Chaine is the firm favourite to stand between the sticks, while on-loan Melusi Buthelezi has understudied him. That leaves experienced Ghanaian Ofori without much game time. Chippa United are sniffing around the 30-year-old. Although it may be harsh to label him a ‘Golden Oldie’, he’s certainly at a crossroads.

Siyabonga Mpontshane

Like Ofori, Mpontshane’s days at the club are numbered. The 38-year-old will need to find a new club in the top-flight to enjoy the twilight of his career in South African football.

Deon Hotto

Namibian utility man Hotto earns more money than any other player at Pirates. At 33, however, the Sea Robbers might be looking to move on from the dependable left-sided star. If he leaves, he’ll certainly do so with plenty of goodwill from the technical team and fans alike.

Thabang Monare

The Bafana Bafana midfielder has hardly featured for the Sea Robbers this season with just 11 appearances in the league. A veteran of 178 DStv Premiership appearances. The 34-year-old journeyman, once of Bidvest Wits and Jomo Cosmos, won’t be part of Jose Riveiro’s plans next season.
