Former PSL forward achieves milestone in continental competition

Former PSL star forward Percy Tau has written a small piece of history in the African Football League (AFL) with Al Ahly in Egypt. Tau, the 2018 PLS Player of the Year, helped Al Ahly reach the AFL semifinal after shrugging off Simba SC on October 24 2023.

In doing so, the Bafana Bafana winger became the first South African ever to reach the last-four stage of the inaugural continental league.

Ex-PSL star’s success with Al Ahly

Tau has enjoyed much success with Al Ahly after winning all domestic silverware plus the CAF Champions League last season. The South African joined the Cairo-based team two seasons ago after leaving Brighton and Hove Albion.

Tau parted ways with the English Premier League side due to lack of game-time. He has spent most of his time on loan in Belgium.

How Tau linked up with former Sundowns mentor

The South African attacker eventually then linked up at Al Ahly with his former Sundowns mentor Pitso Mosimane.

Jingles, too left mid last season to embark on an adventure in the Gulf Region.

The former Bafana handler is now in charge Al Wahda in the United Arab Emirates. Mosimane’s exit has, save for injuries, not affected Tau’s performance.

What milestone has Tau achieved with Al Ahly?

Little wonder, the former PSL star has now achieved the milestone with the Reds. The Egyptian giants edged Tanzania’s Simba SC to reach the AFL semifinal on Tuesday.

Tau started upfront for Al Ahly in the quarterfinal second-leg match played at Cairo International Stadium. The Caf Champions League holders came from behind to share the spoils with Simba at one-all on the afternoon and three-all over two legs. The 2018 South Africa Player of the Year nearly scored when he beat an offside trap. He, however, side-footed his effort wide with Simba’s goalkeeper beaten.

Tau’s striker partner comes to rescue

However, Tau’s striker partner Mahmoud Kahraba came to the rescue when he scored in the 76th minute to level matters for Al Ahly. Earlier, Sadio Kanoute had out the visitors Simba ahead with a thumping header in the 68th minute.

Sundowns join Al Ahly in semis

Sundowns joined Al Ahly in the semifinal, as the South Africans ousted Petro de Luanda of Lunda in Pretoria on Tuesday night. The second leg ended goalless in Pretoria.

The Rulani Mokwena’s outfit carried a two-goal lead from the away quarterfinal first-leg game played in Angola over the weekend.

The Tshwane giants won the away match at the Estadio 11 de Novembr in Luanda courtesy of goals from Marcelo Allende and Thapelo Maseko.
