Ex-striker on why Chiefs must identify problems ASAP

Retired Kaizer Chiefs striker Shane McGregor urges his former club to look deeper and identify its problems ASAP while also calling for a seasoned coach.

McGregor speaks to TimesLIVE just after Chiefs announced the departure of coach Molefi Ntseki after four months in charge of the team, suggesting there are problems at Naturena.

The Amakhosi legendary striker is of the view that the problems are not only about players or the coaching staff, but the management must also do an introspection and identify the issues.

LEGEND: CHIEFS MUST IDENTIFY THEIR PROBLEMS

According to the retired striker, McGregor, argues that the fact that Chiefs failed to win trophies for eight seasons is a big problem and a cause for concern.

Following the former Bafana Bafana coach’s axing, Chiefs announced Cavin Johnson as interim boss while he will be assisted by Dillon Sheppard.

At the same time, the club’s hierarchy demoted Arthur Zwane to the development side with immediate effect.

“Why do you think the club has not done well in the last eight or nine years? I think they’ve done nothing right because they’re not doing that [appointing a coach who comes with his own team],” McGregor told TimesLIVE.

“Any decent coach is going to come with his own people. It is simple as that. You look anywhere in the world that’s what happens.

“But the club must also look past coaches. They must look at where the problem is.

“They must start to identify where the problem is and where it is going wrong, a total outlook at the whole club. They must ask themselves why and what are they doing wrong and how can they change this.”

EX-CHIEFS STRIKER ON WHY A SEASONED COACH IS NEEDED ASAP

While he has coached Platinum Stars, AmaZulu, and as Pitso Mosimane’s assistant coach at Al Ahly, the former striker argues that Amakhosi must act swiftly and hire a seasoned coach.

“To be honest, the sooner the better because then you’re at least giving that coach [the rest of] this season to [establish] exactly where he is and what’s going on so come next year you’re not starting all over again,” adds the former striker.

“Unless you’re going to put Cavin in that position full-time. But if you’re going to bring in a coach you bring him in as soon as possible. But it’s got to be the right coach.

“You’ve got to bring an experienced coach, a coach who knows the game, especially out here [in the PSL].

“When I say an experienced coach, you can’t be looking for your normal guys like [Ernst] Middendorp. They have tried and they haven’t been successful.

“You can’t for instance have another Ntseki.”
