Demanding Riveiro on working with average players at Pirates

Demanding Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro explains why he cannot please all of his players and talks about working with average players.

The demanding Spain-born manager, Riveiro says if he tries to make all the players happy then he won’t do well in his job at Pirates.

In addition, demanding Riveiro has implied he cannot accommodate average players in his squad as he addressed the media on Thursday.

The current MTN8 and Nedbank Cup title holders, Pirates are set to play the second leg of the CAF Champions League preliminary tie at Orlando Stadium.

With Pirates having recently parted ways with players such as Collins Makgaka, Goodman Mosele, Craig Martin, and Tshegofatso Mabasa, the coach seems to be demanding more from his troops.

Riveiro added that he is not coaching Pirates to please and keep players happy, he explains working with average players will not benefit the club.

“I’m not here to keep the players happy. I’m here to help them be a better team and to be better footballers,” Riveiro explained to the media per Sowetan.

“The moment that we are part of the group, players and coaching staff, we have to accept the roles in a way that it is a very competitive squad. If you are not a good player, you are not going to be part of this group.

“All of them are very important, quality, international players with different objectives and different moments in their careers.”

DEMANDING RIVEIRO ON BEING FAIR TO HIS PLAYERS

As they finalised their preparations for his second match in CAF interclub football, Riveiro said he is working hard and always attempts to make his players feel supported.

“We try to make them feel part of the process as much as possible. Also, a capacity to be fair to them because I have many players who deserve to be in the starting XI,” added Riveiro.

“I have to be unfair with some of them because, unfortunately, we cannot play 20, that’s the reality and the football rules. The players are smart and they understand and accept it. If I try to please anyone, it is not going to work.”

The clash at Orlando Stadium is scheduled to get underway at 19:30 as the hosts look to reach the next stage of the lucrative tournament.
