Former Mamelodi Sundowns defender rejoins SuperSport

Former Mamelodi Sundowns left-back Lyle Lakay has joined SuperSport United on a permanent transfer.

The Bafana Bafana international signed a two-year deal with an option to extend, Matsatsantsa confirmed on their website.

The 32-year-old returns to SuperSport from Sundowns where he won multiple titles with the Brazilians.

Lakay leaves Sundowns after five years

Lakay started with Matsatsantsa youth academy and was promoted to the senior team by head coach Gavin Hunt in 2009. He then went on to play 15 games in his maiden season before he was loaned out to FC Cape Town.

Following his loan spell, Lakay was signed by Bloemfontein Celtic where he made a name for himself. After a successful stay in the Free State province, he joined Masandawana.

During his time at Sundowns, Lakay made over 200 appearances in all competitions, winning 10 trophies which include, four league championships, three Nedbank Cups, Two Telkom Knockouts, and one MTN 8 trophy.

Last season, Lakay was on loan to Cape Town City

The Bafana Bafana left-back said he was happy to return ‘home.’

“I’m very happy to be back where it all started with the same coach that gave me my professional debut. I know the coach’s mentality and what the team has achieved before with winning trophies, finishing third last season and winning the league when the coach was here,” said the former Mamelodi Sundowns man.

“By saying that, I think we have a good mix of experience and youngsters to try and compete for silverware and I will do my best to try and help the team, but also to help and guide the youngsters.”
