Sundowns had a rather weird season in the 2022/23 campaign, as although they dominated the local league as per usual in recent times, with a record sixth title in a row, they failed to win any of the other three competitions they were involved in. Rulani Mokoena’s charges bowed out of the MTN 8 in anti-climatic style, with Pirates thrashing them 3-0 thanks to a Mannopule Saleng brace.

Sundowns also found themselves knocked out of the Nedbank Cup at the quarter-final stages and that was at the hands of Stellenbosch FC. They lost that game 2-1 having taken the lead at the Danie Craven Stadium. It was then another anticlimactic end for the Brazilians as they bowed out of the CAF Champions League at home to Wydad Casablanca on goal difference, despite being unbeaten and being billed as favourites for the competition.

Now, in an effort to regain all of their domestic cups Sundowns have so far reportedly signed Junior Mendieta from Stellenbosch, with a whole host of players expected to follow. They have also made sure that they get the best preparation possible ahead of what promises to be a gruelling season. The club will be competing in five different competitions in the 2023/24 and before it begins, they are set to jet off to the Netherlands.

Sundowns set to face NEC Breda

In the Netherlands, Sundowns are expected to player against NEC Breda on the 28th of July, the Dutch second tier side announced on their website. As of now, it looks likes Breda are the only team Masandawana will be playing against abroad before returning home.
