Coaches to stay, Lakay to say goodbye

Sundowns coach Rhulani Mokwena led the Brazilians to a sixth successive league title earlier this season, but there is no doubt that in the coming years he will have ambitions of leading the club to great success in Africa in addition to their local hegemony.

According to SABC Sport, Mokwane has been offered a four-year contract ahead of the 2023-24 campaign, with Masandawana clearly seeing value in his continued role as the sole head coach.

It’s further reported by iDiski Times that Mokwena formally signed his new deal at the start of this week, while there has also been support of his current technical team.

Other Sundowns coaching news

For quite some time, it has been reported that Manqoba Mngqithi is in the final few months of his contract with Sundowns, and that a club like Chiefs could possibly pounce to try and snap up his services.

The speculation arose after a coaching shake-up earlier this season at Sundowns, which led to speculation that Mngqithi may look for a new challenge after speculation suggested he had effectively been ‘demoted’.

Yet, it’s stated that he will remain in a key role as senior coach next season, with Steve Komphela serving as first team coach, while Kennedy Mweene will act as an assistant goalkeeper coach to Wendell Robinson.

Player movement for Lakay

In another report by SABC Sport, it’s suggested that defender Lyle Lakay, who was in line for a return from a loan spell with Cape Town City, will in fact now bid farewell to the club.

Lakay’s future at Sundowns always seemed unclear after he was loaned out in what did come as quite a surprise at the time, and now it’s reported that his contract will not be renewed when it expires soon.
